Day 2, Locality 3
3) Palaichori, F914 (E903) roadcut; eastern end.

At the eastern end
of the roadcut a large mass of leucocratic rock is seen intruding the
surrounding dykes. This is a high level plagiogranite, which is itself intruded
by some wavy dykes. There is no chilling of dykes or plagiogranite, so both were
at relatively high temperature during intrusion. Intrusion of the plagiogranite
seems to be by assimilation. It is composed of plagioclase, quartz, and dark
acicular amphibole, the final product of the differentiation of basic magma.

Paul is standing beside the CY4 borehole, drilled by the Cyprus Crustal Study
Project (CCSP) in the 1980's. It is 2,263 metres deep and penetrated
through 700 metres of sheeted dykes before entering a section of complex
plutonic rocks. The contact between these two units is marked by a sheared
and altered zone that may represent a detachment surface.
