Day 3,  Mt Adelfoi Summit

The final stretch is a series of hairpin bends up to the look-out station on the summit, but this is on a smooth concrete surface - a welcome relief from the angular boulders of the trail.

Adelfoi summit and the Fire Lookout, seen from the west

Adelfoi is composed of several formations. There are three main summits, forming a triangle at the centre of which there is a profound saddle (the culmination point of the dirt roads of the area). The main summit carries the only fire lookout on Cyprus which is open to the public. The south summit is home to the radio antennae previously mentioned whilst all the western summit carries is a bench and a "certified lookout" (a term for lookouts which are advertised by signposts).

The fire lookout post is manned continuously throughout during the dry summer months, to give advance warning of any fires.  It must be a boring task (except during thunderstorms!) and the watchman welcomes any visitors with a glass (or 3) of ouzo while sandwiches are consumed before the journey back!

From here the whole of Cyprus is on display, Troodos in the west, as well as the northern and southern coasts. Often visibility is limited by dust haze but, on a clear day, the Pentadictylos Range (Kyrenia Range) can be seen stretching away as far as the panhandle of the Karpaz Peninsula in the extreme north-east of the island.

Altogether a memorable day out!
