Day 4, Locality 1c
1c) The next stop is at a long roadcut showing quite jumbled blocks of pale grey-green mantle harzburgite, with numerous shiny black sheets of serpentinite. In parts of the section the sheets of serpentinite are associated with black cataclastic mylonites, and zones of brucite and talc mineralization. These are shear planes associated with transform fault movement, and measurement of the shear planes suggest an approximately E-W trend. Many of the serpentinised shear planes are associated with blocks and fragments of harzburgite and other lithologies, in a tectonic melange. Examination of the serpentinites in the shear planes gives evidence of plastic flow. The brucite and talc zones also show a tectonic foliation.
Three short videos of the complete section provide orientation (no sound, just wind buffet): MPG-1 WMV-1 ; MPG-2 WMV-2 ; MPG-3 WMV-3
